September 24th at the market

At farmers markets everywhere, we talk about the importance of buying local. That is true of the Medford Square Market as well, but we take it a step further and find it important to support local artists and performers as well.

When visiting the Medford Square Market stop by the Bestsellers Cafe who carries books, pictures and artwork from some of Medford's finest.

Below are two books, written by Medford's own, Barbara Kerr. They are carried weekly at the Medford Square Market by Bestsellers Cafe.

For your musical performance, if the weather allows, the Tokyo Tramps will be performing at 3pm.

Why Locally Grown?

People worldwide are rediscovering the benefits of buying local food. It is fresher than anything in the supermarket and that means it is tastier and more nutritious. It is also good for your local economy, buying directly from family farmers helps them stay in business.

Support your community, come to the Medford Square Market

See you THURSDAY 12-6PM, in the square

Easy Summer Soup

I just came across this recipe and wanted to share. It's a recipe that comes from "Vegetable Harvest" by Patricia Wells. All of the 3 ingredients in this simple recipe can be purchased this week at the Medford Square Market.

This summer favorite takes a classic and gives it a twist:
Tomato and Strawberry Gazpacho.

To make, puree 1 pound of garden-fresh tomatoes (rinsed, cored, and quartered, but not peeled) and 1 pound of fresh strawberries (rinsed and stemmed) in a food processor or blender. Add 1 teaspoon of balsamic vinegar and blend again. Chill thoroughly and serve in eight small, clear glasses as a refreshing aperitif.

Enjoy! and see you this week at the Medford Square Market

Whats for dinner tonight?

Pasta a la Checca

You've just gotten home from work, and the kids are hungry after a day at camp. If you stopped off at the farmers market today, here's a recipe that will help you get dinner on the table in less than 20 minutes. You can also put the kids to work by having them crush the tomatoes.

* items can all be found at the Medford Square Market

8 ounces thin spaghetti
*2 pints cherry tomatoes (such as orange, red, and yellow teardrop varieties)
*2 garlic cloves, peeled and finely chopped
*4 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
*1 cup fresh arugula (optional)
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

1) Cook the pasta until al dente.
2) Meanwhile, in a large bowl, squeeze the tomatoes to break them up (it's faster than chopping, and your kid will likely love joining in).
3) Add the garlic, oil, arugula (if using), salt, and pepper; set aside.
4) Drain the pasta (reserving 1/2 cup of the water) and toss it with the tomatoes. If the pasta is still a little dry, add some of the cooking water.
5) Let it sit until the heat from the pasta has cooked the tomatoes and garlic slightly and wilted the arugula, 1 to 2 minutes. Serve warm or at room temperature.

TIP: When all else fails, add cheese. Fresh, grated Parmesan sprinkled on top is always a crowd-pleaser, or break up some fresh mozzarella cheese into the tomatoes and let the hot pasta melt it.
